The Victoria Advanced Technology Council (VIATeC) hosts annual technology awards for new products and companies. We are proud to announce that the GS-5000 placed us as finalists in both the Environmental Excellence and Innovative Excellence award categories.
Though we didn't actually take home the awards for which we were nominated, we received some rather fantastic beer glasses (a runner-up is allowed to drink heavily). The awards deservingly went to two local companies, AXYS Technologies and iDUS Controls LTD.
AXYS Technologies took home the Innovative Excellence award for their WindSentinel™, a wind resource assessment buoy that is small, affordable, and avoids a mess of red tape.
iDUS Control LTD received the Environmental Excellence award for their series of Conservepump™ SmartBoxes, smart and compact systems for recycling grey water inside of the home, garden systems, or an outdoor tap.
We would like to extend our congratulations to these great companies, and extend our appreciation for improving conditions on the tiny blue marble we call home.

Established perennial dandelions are a very tough, challenging weed, with a big “taproot” holding their energy reserves. However, newly sprouted dandelions can be easily controlled if they are steamed before they get established. If you are dealing with a crop of big old trophy dandelions there are two approaches.
First, the monthly system for high profile areas entails starting your steaming “rounds” early in the season to eliminate the new seedlings and deplete the old timers' carbohydrate reserves before they get rolling. Do the next round when the dandelions show three to four inches (spread diameter) of regrowth. This will be labour intensive at first and may require reapplication as often as every 3 weeks during warm, wet spring weather, but less dandelions will survive each monthly round and in the following year(s) there will be fewer old dandelions and less labour intensity. The challenge is to initially exhaust and reduce the established dandelions and then follow-up with monthly rounds so they cannot recover. Persistence will result in a weed free zone.
The other method, for lower profile areas such as municipal sidewalks, requires less application cycles, generally two in the spring and perhaps one in the fall. This won't eliminate all established dandelions but it will control them and reduce or eliminate most other weeds before they seed.
